Ghee occupies a strange position in Indian nutrition. One camp calls it liquid heart disease and bans it at the first high cholesterol report. The other camp, louder every year, calls it an ancient superfood that cures everything. The evidence supports neither.
Ghee is predominantly saturated fat. Saturated fat, eaten in excess, raises LDL cholesterol in most people. That sentence contains the entire honest case against ghee, and notice the load-bearing words: in excess. A teaspoon on a phulka is not the same dietary event as ghee-laden sweets and fried snacks arriving daily.
What damages your lipid profile more than ghee
- Trans fats: found in repeatedly heated oils, many bakery products, and cheap packaged snacks. Per gram, these are the most lipid-hostile fats known.
- Sugar and refined carbs: the primary driver of high triglycerides, the number that scares people into banning ghee while their sweetened tea continues untouched.
- Total pattern: a diet with almost no fibre, few vegetables, and frequent fried food will produce ugly lipids regardless of whether the ghee jar survives.

For most people with high LDL, a measured 1 to 2 teaspoons a day inside an otherwise well-built diet is workable, and we set the exact number from the lipid profile rather than ideology. What matters more is what surrounds it: daily soluble fibre from oats, dalia, beans, and vegetables, which actively lowers LDL; nuts in sensible portions; and the near-elimination of trans fat sources. That is the architecture of the cholesterol plans we build.
Reading your own report before blaming any food
LDL, HDL, and triglycerides respond to different foods. High LDL points toward fat quality and fibre. High triglycerides point toward sugar, refined carbs, and alcohol. Blaming ghee for a triglyceride problem is like blaming the tyre for an engine fault. Get the full lipid profile, understand which number is off, and aim the food changes at the actual target. If you are on a statin, diet still matters; the two work through different mechanisms and stack well together.

Is ghee better than refined oil?
They serve different roles. For everyday cooking, a rotation of common oils in measured amounts works well; ghee earns its small daily place for taste. No cooking fat is a health food in large quantities, including cold-pressed and A2 varieties.
Are eggs a problem with high cholesterol?
For most people, an egg a day fits comfortably. Dietary cholesterol affects blood cholesterol less than saturated and trans fats do. Your plan should set your number based on your report.
